Hugo Boss adopts cheap-brand model

The pricey German fashion group Hugo Boss will use a strategy pioneered by lower-cost brands to get new collections out faster, chief executive Claus-Dietrich Lahrs said in an interview on Tuesday.

“Shortening the times from collection development to production and delivery to the customer is crucial for our future success,” Lahrs told the Finance Times.

Boss sought the “speed and reactivity” of popular European retail chains like Zara and H&M, but would maintain its position as a premium brand, he added.

The German group also wants to increase the number of its stores from about 450 this to to 700 by 2015, with a strong focus on China.

The German fashion company, which is majority owned by the Britain-based private equity group Permira, wants to lift sales from 1.6 billion euros (two billion dollars) in 2009 to 2.5 billion euros by 2015.

Just under half the store openings are set for China, where Boss set up a joint venture in July and which will be one of its largest markets in five years.

Boss also plans to increase the proportion of sales from its own retail stores to around half from one-third at present, and Lahrs said it would cut complexity and deliver a more “focused” collection.

Lanvin to team up with H&M

High-street retailer H&M on Thursday announced plans to collaborate with French design label Lanvin.

The collection will be designed by Lanvin’s artistic director Alber Elbaz, and menswear designer Lucas Ossendrijver.

This exclusive winter collection will go on sale on November 23rd at 200 H&M stores worldwide

H&M approached us to collaborate, and to see if we could translate the dream we created at Lanvin to a wider audience, not just a dress for less,” says Elbaz.

“I have said in the past that I would never do a mass-market collection, but what intrigued me was the idea of H&M going luxury rather than Lanvin going public.

This has been an exceptional exercise, where two companies at opposite poles can work together because we share the same philosophy of bringing joy and beauty to men and women around the world.”

Previous designer collaborations for the Swedish high street giant have included Karl Lagerfeld, Sonia Rykiel and Stella McCartney.

Prospective shoppers will be able to have a sneak preview of the designs on November 2, when a film showcasing the collection will be released alber elbaz 468x312 Lanvin to team up with H&M

Hollywood’s Best Actors For The Buck

shia labeouf Hollywoods Best Actors For The Buck

For the second year, Shia LaBeouf, star of the Transformers series, ranks number one on Forbes magazine’s list of Hollywood’s “Best Actors For The Buck.”

The actors in this annual listing are considered a good investment at the box office for film studios. For each $1 the studio spent on LaBeouf for a film, it received an average of $81 in profits.

The actor has also starred in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the upcoming Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

Other actors topping the list are Anne Hathaway at number two and Daniel Radcliffe of the Harry Potter franchise, ranking third.

Forbes’s criteria required actors to star in three films over the last five years which screened in more than 500 theaters.

It did not include animated movies. Earnings included salary and any guaranteed share of the profits.

Each movie’s budget, box office, and TV and DVD sales were part of the calculations. This ratio eliminated some of the top-paid actors whose fees cut into box office profit margins.

Ferrari recalls 1,250 cars after some catch fire

ferrari 458 italia fire 468x253 Ferrari recalls 1,250 cars after some catch fire

Ferrari announced Wednesday it had recalled all versions of its model 458 Italia sports car produced before July 2010 after four of them caught fire.

“Our dealers are going to call clients and tell them to bring back their cars so that the necessary modifications can be carried out,” a spokesman told AFP. The recall involves 1,248 vehicles worldwide, the official said.

Ferrari last week opened an enquiry after four of its vehicles caught fire spontaneously in California, China, France and Switzerland.

The investigation had shown problems with the mounting, adhesive, heat shields and wheel arch assembly, the spokesman said.

“High outside temperatures and intensive use of the vehicle cause a distortion and the vehicle catches fire,” he said, adding that the modification will include replacing the heat shields.

India dreams of success with ‘chateau mango’

indian mango 468x287 India dreams of success with chateau mango

Researchers in India say they have developed a wine made from mangoes that they hope might one day compete with the traditional grape-based variety.

Scientists at the Central Institute of Subtropical Horticultural Research in Lucknow have produced wines using three types of mango native to the local state of Uttar Pradesh — the Dussehri, Langra, and Chausa.

India is the world’s largest mango producer and is home to nearly 1,000 varieties of the succulent and juicy fruit — something the researchers hope could be harnessed into a new drinks industry.

“We thought if France, Italy or Australia had made a mark for themselves as leaders in the wine industry, essentially because of their abundant grape produce, why don’t we try out our skills with the huge quantities of mango grown in this region?” Neelima Garg, who led the research team, told AFP.

“Just as each of the mango varieties taste different, each of the wines too varies in taste as well as in flavour,” added Garg, who has been working on the project for the past two years.

Indian mangoes come in all hues, shapes and sizes, from the the pale-fleshed Safedas, “the white ones,” or the deeper-toned, sweeter Chausa that can be sucked like a packaged drink.

The mango most familiar to overseas fans of the fruit is likely to be the the pricey Alphonso, which some Indians call the “king” among fruit.

The main problem researchers in Lucknow faced was treating the viscous mango pulp to make it thin enough to pass as wine.

“The process of fermentation is not very tough as mango contains huge quantities of sugar, which is the basic source of alcohol, but balancing the viscosity is what needs to be done very carefully,” she said.

Alcohol content in the slightly yellow, sweet drink is 8.0-9.0 percent, lower than a typical wines made from grapes which generally range from 10-15 percent.

Wine is a relatively new entrant in the Indian alcohol market, which is dominated by whisky, but industry insiders expect consumption to rise exponentially, particularly in urban areas.

The main Indian wine-growing region is in the western and southern states of Maharastra and Karnataka, where the biggest domestic producers, Grover and Sula, are based.

They, like other smaller producers, have imported European technology and know-how as they develop into major producers for a domestic market that is still highly protected.

Imported wine is hit with heavy duties that can double the price of a bottle, making it difficult for low and medium-range New World and European producers to enter the enticing market.

“India has embarked on a wine adventure,” Kapil Grover, owner of Grover Wines, which has 165 hectares (410 acres) of vineyards in Karnataka, explained to AFP earlier this year.

Wine-tasting sessions and wine clubs are spreading through the cities.

Researchers in Lucknow and elsewhere are hoping that this adventure could include more exotic wines made from mangoes, blackberries or even apples.

Manish Kasture is part of a team of scientists based at the state-funded Dapoli University in western India.

He is applying for patents on wine made from cashew apples and blackberries. He also has a mango wine in the pipeline, but “it needs some fine-tuning,” he explained.

“Grape wine is available all over the world,” he said, “but these wines are healthier. They have antioxidants and vitamins.”

In Lucknow, institute director H. Ravishankar believes that it will “surely be a big draw with all fond of good liquor,” and hopes to ink a deal with a commercial wine producer.

Wine specialist and president of Delhi Wine Club, Subhash Arora, sniffed at the proposed new brew.

“It is certainly feasible to make wine from mangoes,” he said. “The issue is the quality, flavour, spoilage and marketing. This will be a niche market at best and unless the basic wine market develops, there is not much scope.

“Himachal Pradesh (in northern India) already makes fruit wines and barring apple wine, others are barely drinkable — if at all.”

Middle Eastern airlines embrace in-flight connectivity

onair 468x310 Middle Eastern airlines embrace in flight connectivity

Egypt Air has become the latest airline in the Middle East region to offer in-flight connectivity to passengers.

The Egyptian flag-carrier equipped its latest A330-300 with the technology, which allows passengers to use GSM, SMS and GPRS services from their mobile providers on board.

Passengers will also be able to use wifi connections throughout the flight, said the airline, thanks to an arrangement with OnAir which will see the technology rolled out across the fleet.

By February 2012, all of EgyptAir’s twin-aisle A330-300 aircraft will be fitted with the technology and will operate on European, Middle Eastern and North American routes, the carrier said last year.

Carriers in the Middle East have been among the first in the world to adopt sophisticated mobile and internet communications systems capable of long-haul travel.

In March this year, Oman Air made history by becoming the first long-haul carrier to offer both mobile and wifi connectivity on one of its planes.

In May, Libyan Airlines announces that mobile and wifi technology will be incorporated onboard its fleet of long-haul A330 and mid-range A320 aircraft from September this year.

At around the same time, Qatar also confirmed that it will offer broadband connectivity on all of its Boeing 787s.

Dubai giant Emirates announced in July that all 90 of its flagship, double decker A380s will be equipped with mobile and internet connectivity, starting in June 2012.

How to find a green hotel

con ecotent view 468x311 How to find a green hotel

Many hotels promise to be green nowadays, but where can travelers find more information to help them choose the most eco-friendly hotel?

Online booking site Travelocity believes that travelers actually prefer green hotels. According to its statistics, eco-friendly properties get higher reviews than their non-green counterparts.

For many consumers, search sites such as Travelocity, Expedia and Orbitz will be the first stop in booking a hotel and all three have tried to make it easier.

Travelocity lists more than 2,000 hotels in its Green Hotel Directory and refuses to accept “self-certified” hotels, forcing companies to provide their commitment to sustainability.

Expedia lists over 1,700 hotels in its Green Hotels program and also offers customers the chance to offset carbon based on distance flown.

Orbitz, another major travel site, uses its own research and market managers to identify green hotels, saying that hotels must have efforts in place in at least one of five areas to be recognized as eco-friendly.

It also automatically recognizes all US properties that have earned the Energy Star efficiency rating.

The rating for each booking site varies slightly, so sometimes it can be easier to check directly with the hotel operators itself, although some brands make it easier than others.

Starwood brand Element is probably the easiest for consumers — it mandates that all its properties pursue the US government’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, along with initiatives to reduce waste at properties and offer electric car charging stations.

carbon footprint calculator 468x290 How to find a green hotel

Earlier this month, Spanish hotel chain NH Hotels introduced a Carbon Footprint Calculator, which tells guests exactly how much carbon they’ll generate getting to and staying at an NH property.

The calculator is the first of a kind for a hotel chain and can calculate the impact of using different modes of transport to get to different properties — the chain also offers biodegradeable toiletries and offers “eco-meetings” for business customers.

Nordic chain Scandic has also been cited as an industry leader after removing bottled water from its hotels in 2008 and promising 100 percent organic uniforms for staff by the end of this year.

For independent analysis, consumers can consult the same schemes that Travelocity and Expedia use to certify their properties, such as Green Key, Sustainable Travel International, Earthcheck, Green Globe or Energy Star.

Bono and and his wife Ali Hewson star in the newest of Louis Vuitton’s “core values” ads shot by Annie Leibovitz.

The couple, who were shot in South Africa, wear clothing by Edun, Hewson’s sustainable fashion line. in which LVMH took a 49 percent stake last year.

it’s the first time the U2 front man has appeared in an ad without his band, and the first time a label other than Vuitton is getting a fashion credit.

Antoine Arnault, Vuitton’s director of communications, explained that Edun’s presence in a LV campaign would give the small brand major international exposure.

Ali Hewson carries a new handbag that was a join project between Edun and LV and has a special charm that is the French firm’s first made-in-Africa product.

The ad — which reads “Every Journey Begins in Africa” — features the humanitarian duo arriving in an African grassland.

The ad coincides with Paris Fashion Week’s Africa Rising Exhibition, where contemporary African art will be sold alongside Edun’s Spring collection.

Both Bono and Hewson donated their appearance fee to charity organizations that promote growth in developing countries.

A portion of the profits from their new co-designed LV bag will also go to charity.
